It’s been called the “ethic of reciprocity” and it’s pretty simple: Treat others the way you’d like them to treat you.

Americans have a competitive spirit, but aren't always known for working well as a team. Many think Americans are self-centered, and lack the ability to truly function as a team. As I watched the Olympics recently, I was touched seeing our athletes use their individual talents to benefit their teams. Our women's gymnastics team and the men's 200-meter freestyle relay team both won gold medals, and I was brought to tears while watching them apply the Golden Rule.

Michael Phelps won his 19th Olympic medal and became the most decorated Olympic athlete of all time. Camera crews interviewed Phelps after his race and he continually gave credit to and praised his teammates; however his thanks weren't just for the cameras. In the team's private huddles the genuine appreciation could be seen from Phelps.

The women's gymnastics team not only won the first gold medal in the United States women's gymnastics history, but the “Fab Five” had our ladies on the podium for the first time since the 1996 Atlanta games. These teams encouraged each other constantly, and by using this encouragement they applied the Golden Rule. An example could be seen between gymnast Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman.

"I don't think I can do this," said Raisman.

Douglas quickly encouraged her teammate, who regained her confidence and replied “You’re right; I can.” They applied the Golden Rule and it paid off with two gold medals for the United States. Both teams supported one another and showed the world miracles do happen when teams work together for the greater good.

Sunday night Justin Gatlin, a two-time world champion, stated “this is not about me, it is about America”.

Now that is golden.

There have been many examples of this “ethic of reciprocity” throughout the games. We’d love to hear your favorite. You can post your examples on our Facebook wall by clicking here.
